Brendan associated the first reel particularly with the playing of Peter Horan, and usually referred to it as “The Flying Column” or “Peter Horan’s”. Moya Acheson was an organist in Dundalk and Brendan recalled singing in choir under her direction. Moya Acheson recorded with John Joe Gardiner and John Joe’s sister Kathleen Harrington as “The Gardiner Traditional Trio” in the 1930s. On that recording on the turn of the tune she played the counter melody and descending scale heard in this recording, which Brendan subsequently learned and passed on to his students.

Absolutely sensational - love the generally low-end tones and planxty-esque set up, but most of all the incredible energy of it! Wish more instrumental trad was like this, love the fact that it's recorded live too. Prangman
